Chapter 666: Don't call her at 665

Chapter 666: Don’t call her at 665

Wen Ran’s brows knitted tighter, tonight?

What did Mo Xiuchen mean by tonight? Could it be, while he’s hospitalized here, has he been looking into those matters all along? With this thought, her heart tightened once again.

“Xiuchen, as long as we find Fu Jingyi, you needn’t worry about your illness.”

Qin Mu’s gaze settled on Mo Xiuchen’s lean face. This version of Mo Xiuchen looked like a stranger in his eyes. He knew the frequency of his headaches had been increasing these days. He could imagine how uncomfortable Xiuchen must be when his head aches.

Just as this thought crossed his mind, he saw Xiuchen’s face stiffen with pain. His brows were tightly furrowed, and his large hand pressed against his forehead. His complexion quickly turned pale.

Qin Mu’s gaze tightened, and he blurted out, “Xiuchen, does it hurt again?”

Mo Xiuchen replied with a nod. The hand pressing against his forehead remained rigid, and after a minute, his face turned ghastly white. Qin Mu wore a look of worry, “Xiuchen, I’ll call the doctor.”

“No need, calling the doctor won’t help, it will pass soon.”

Mo Xiuchen’s voice had grown soft due to the pain in his head, his endurance visible. His forehead was already covered in cold sweat.

In the restaurant opposite the hospital, Wen Ran gripped her water glass tightly, her lips tightly pursed. Her eyelashes sparkled with teardrops, as if they were about to fall any minute.

She listened to the voice on the other end of the phone, straining with pain. Although she couldn’t see his agony, she could imagine him suffering from a painful illness. Her heart felt sliced into pieces and trampled underfoot, shattering into fragments.

Tears, after all, rolled out of her eyes and slid down her cheeks.

All she could do was control herself from crying out loud, restrain herself from running to the hospital across the road, prevent herself from appearing in front of Mo Xiuchen.

“Xiuchen, should I call Wen Ran? Let her talk to you.”

Qin Mu looked at Mo Xiuchen’s pale face, dampened with sweat, with pity. However, as soon as he spoke, Mo Xiuchen, who seconds ago was too pained to speak, suddenly lifted his head, his gaze sharply focusing on Qin Mu, “Don’t call Ranran, don’t let her know.”

Selfishly, he didn’t want her to see him like this.

He always wanted Wen Ran to see him at his best, his most handsome. He remembered how Wen Ran would tear up whenever she heard stories of his past when he was a child. He couldn’t bear to think about how distressed she would be if she saw him in his current state.

However, Mo Xiuchen didn’t know that even if Wen Ran couldn’t see his current state, her heart ached to a point where she could barely breathe.n/o/vel/b//in dot c//om

If he knew how she was sitting in the restaurant across the hospital, shedding tears like rain as she listened to his conversation with Qin Mu, he would probably rush over to see her.

Whenever the pain became overwhelming, he would sustain himself by thinking about her.

He had lost weight, the pain became increasingly unbearable, with an increasing frequency day by day.

On the days the pain subsided, the exhaustion wasn’t unbearable, but his thoughts were always occupied, and he felt a constant agony. Yet, he had things to do. He often looked through old photos, re-read her texts to him.

A week passed just like that.

His biggest fear was that he suddenly couldn’t remember the first time he saw Wen Ran. Everything about that event at the banquet became blurry. Her face, her smile…

The headache lasted for five minutes. This bout of pain was now over.

Qin Mu noticed Mo Xiuchen relaxing his hand from his forehead, heaving breaths weakly. Qin Mu quickly pulled out a tissue, allowing him to wipe his sweat, then he poured Xiuchen warm water.

“Xiuchen, drink some water.”

Qin Mu handed Mo Xiuchen the cup.

Mo Xiuchen’s hand trembled slightly due to the wave of pain he had just gone through. Qin Mu wanted to help him drink, but Xiuchen refused, “I can do it myself.”

His voice was hoarse. Stabilizing himself, he slowly took the cup from Qin Mu, drank the water, and handed the cup back to Qin Mu. He let his body lean back into the head of the bed in exhaustion.

“Ah Mu, where will you stay tonight?”

After about half a minute of rest, Mo Xiuchen asked gently.

Qin Mu tugged at the corner of his mouth, responding calmly, “I’ve booked a hotel. I’ll head back there soon.”

“You’re injured, go get some rest.”

“Sure. You should rest too. I’ll visit you tomorrow,” remembering that Wen Ran was waiting in the restaurant across the street, Qin Mu didn’t overstay. He got up, exchanged a look with Xiuchen, and left the sickroom.

**

As Qin Mu exited the elevator, he took out his phone and realized the call had ended.

A flicker of worry flashed across his gaze. He strode out of the hospital and spotted Wen Ran sitting by the window on the second floor of the restaurant across the street.

Her eyes were red and swollen, full of tears that sparkled brilliantly. Hearing his footsteps, she lifted her head, and in the blink of an eye, her eyes – shining like stars in the sky – shot straight to his heart.

His heart ached at the sight of her tears, and his brows furrowed.

Wen Ran wiped her tears fiercely, clearly in distress but still forced a smile at Qin Mu, “Qin Mu, what do you want to eat?”

Qin Mu stayed silent, pressing his lips together and looking at Wen Ran who was pretending to be okay. Wen Ran blinked, thinking he was troubled because she had been crying, she explained softly, “I’m okay.”

Qin Mu let out a silent sigh, “Once we find Fu Jingyi, Xiuchen will be okay.”

Truth be told, his words couldn’t really comfort Wen Ran, but he still wanted to say something to make her feel better.

Wen Ran managed to smile, forcing the tears in her eyes away, “I know. Fu Jingyi will surely know what to do.”

While she said this, a thought occurred to Wen Ran. A thought that would fill Qin Mu and the others with fear and unease.

Once that thought emerged, she wanted to do just that.

Qin Mu summoned a waiter to order food. Both of them had little appetite and ate slowly, taking a long time to finish their meal.

As they left the restaurant, Wen Ran looked up at the hospital building across the street, a myriad of reluctances in her heart.

Qin Mu said nothing. His tall silhouette stood by her side, quietly watching her.

Only when her neck started to ache did Wen Ran tear her gaze away. Beside her, Qin Mu’s gentle and calm voice rang out, “Let’s go back to the hotel. Get a good night’s sleep. We can come back tomorrow.”

“Okay!”

Wen Ran nodded softly, ignoring the pain in her heart that showed no signs of dissipating. She glanced towards the direction of the hotel. The hotel Qin Mu booked this time was not the same one she stayed in with Mo Xiuchen before.

However, it was very close to that hotel and not very far from the hospital. She looked up at Qin Mu, “Let’s walk back to the hotel.”
