Chapter 1331: The Birth of a New Incense
Chapter 1331: The Birth of a New Incense
The Next Day, Yuga had prepared all the Pokémon and Pokémon eggs that Boss Monde needed. Monde had already arranged a transport team from the Pidgey Express ahead of time, so once everything was ready, he loaded the Pokémon and eggs onto the vehicles and set off.
Before leaving, Monde warmly said, "Whenever you visit Rustboro City, you must come by my place. I'll make sure to host you properly."
Monde was establishing his Pokémon Day Care in Rustboro City, meaning he would be settling there permanently. Most of his future time would be spent in Rustboro City.
Yuga smiled and replied, "I will. We'll have plenty of chances to work together in the future. I wish you a safe journey and also an early congratulations on the grand opening of your Pokémon Day Care."
"Haha, thank you for your kind words." Monde laughed heartily, gave Yuga a hug, and left with the transport team.
Time flew by, and after a few more days, the Island Ecopark was fully operational. Yuga found his life relaxing once more. He resumed visiting Lain every day to continue learning incense-making techniques, while also setting aside time to practice making PokéBlocks.
Since improving his PokéBlock-making skills to the advanced level, Yuga felt he had reached a deeper understanding of the craft. Coupled with the instructional videos rewarded by his system, he believed it was only a matter of time before he reach Master level.
A top-tier PokéBlock maker was an extremely rare talent in the outside world.
Thanks to the teaching materials Yuga provided, Misaki and Anya's PokéBlock-making skills were also advancing rapidly.
Unlike Yuga, who was of average talent, both Misaki and Anya had exceptional talent in PokéBlock-making. Misaki, whose skills were already better than Yuga's, was on the verge of becoming a top-tier master, while Anya's abilities were quickly catching up to Yuga's level.
If not for the significant amount of time Anya spent studying breeder knowledge under Mr. Harrison, she might have already surpassed Yuga.
As Everlasting Workshop continued expanding its market reach, products from YoYo Daycare, such as PokéBlocks and incense, were being sold worldwide in large quantities. This increased the demand for high-level incense makers and PokéBlock makers at Everlasting Workshop.
Although Everlasting Workshop had established its own training institute, the institution was still young and immature in many aspects, with a limited capacity to produce skilled professionals.
Once Misaki officially became a master-level PokéBlock maker, Yuga planned to have her teach at Everlasting Workshop's training institute for a while.
When Everlasting Workshop launched its institute, it spent a hefty sum hiring teachers, but talents like incense makers and PokéBlock makers were so rare that money alone often wasn't enough to attract them.
Both incense making and PokéBlock crafting were professions rooted in legacy. High-level practitioners typically belonged to specific organizations, while freelancers tended to be of lower caliber.
Poaching skilled professionals was difficult because employment contracts for incense makers and PokéBlock makers were highly regulated in the Pokémon world. These professionals enjoyed excellent compensation but were also bound by strict agreements, making it nearly impossible for them to leave their original employers casually.
One morning, when Yuga entered the workshop, Lain, Seien, and Kano were already there. As soon as he stepped inside, Lain called out, "Yuga, come and smell this new incense I just developed. Tell me how it smells." n/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om
Lain was a very diligent researcher. After thoroughly studying the incense manual that AnYuga gie had provided her, she began experimenting with creating incense that could surpass the effects recorded in the manual, hoping to forge her own path.
However, the incense manual Yuga had shared was a treasured piece from Mr. Kuni'o, a collection of top-quality recipes. The formulas it contained were masterpieces refined through the painstaking efforts of their predecessors, making it no easy feat to surpass them.
In the past, Lain had developed quite a few new types of incense, but none could truly outperform those in the manual. Most were merely imitations or slight modifications of existing recipes.
Still, Lain was persistent, and a few setbacks couldn't deter her.
Yuga was already aware of the incense Lain had been working on today. She had buried herself in research for days, pouring her heart into this project. It seemed she had finally made a breakthrough.
As Yuga walked closer, he saw Lain, Kano, and Seien gathered around a small incense burner. From the burner, thin wisps of smoke were curling upward.
In fact, Yuga had noticed the fragrance as soon as he stepped inside. Now, as he approached the burner, the scent grew even stronger. The moment he inhaled it, his mind suddenly felt clear and sharp, as though his thoughts were energized—a fascinating sensation.
Leaning closer to the burner, Yuga waved his hand to draw the scent toward him. Immediately, a distinctive floral fragrance hit him, and he realized, "This is a Rose Incense."
"Did you use flowers from the Nemora Chesto Berry tree?" Yuga asked in surprise after sniffing it.
The Nemora Chesto Berry trees were ones Yuga had brought back from Foretree City. They were notoriously difficult to grow elsewhere but thrived in the ecological park, where Yuga had planted many.
Unlike ordinary Chesto Berries, known for curing sleep conditions, Nemora Chesto Berries lacked significant medicinal value. However, their flavor was exceptional, which made Yuga particularly fond of them.
Moreover, the flowers of the Nemora Chesto Berry tree had a unique, fresh, and elegant aroma that could even slightly boost alertness and mental clarity. Yet, because the effect was so subtle, these flowers also had minimal medicinal applications.
"Yes, yes! Isn't the scent wonderful?" Lain said cheerfully. She loved the aroma of Nemora Chesto Berry flowers as much as Yuga did.
"It's truly remarkable," Yuga nodded. "But incense needs more than just a pleasant scent; it must be effective for Pokémon as well."
"Of course!" Lain replied, her expression suddenly filled with pride. "I've already tested it. This new Rose Incense can not only accelerate the energy accumulation of Grass-type Pokémon but also help them learn new moves faster."
"Really?" Yuga exclaimed, surprised. If that was true, then Lain had indeed succeeded—spectacularly, even.
"Let me tell you..." Lain began excitedly, pulling Yuga aside to share the inspiration behind her creation.
As it turned out, she had accidentally combined the flowers of the Nemora Chesto Berry tree with the pollen from a Liligant's head bloom. To her astonishment, Liligant's pollen enhanced the alertness-boosting effect of the Nemora flowers.
She had experimented by incorporating both into her incense formula. After countless trials and adjustments, she had finally perfected this new Rose Incense.
"This Rose Incense needs more testing data before it can be brought to market. How about this? Make more samples, and I'll take them for further evaluation," Yuga suggested.
"Don't worry, I'm very confident this time," Lain replied with conviction.
"But what about the cost of this incense? Setting aside the flowers from the Nemora Chesto Berry tree, the pollen from Liligant isn't exactly cheap, is it?" Yuga asked, voicing a concern that had just crossed his mind.
Although YoYo Day Care raised Liligant, the amount of pollen each Liligant could produce was limited. The daycare's own supply wasn't sufficient to meet the demand, so the workshop had to purchase additional pollen externally.
Due to its low yield and the rarity of Liligant as a Pokémon, the market price for Liligant pollen had always remained high.
Lain froze for a moment at Yuga's words—she had completely forgotten to account for costs. Looking somewhat embarrassed, she admitted, "The cost is indeed a bit higher than that of regular incense."
Of course it was, Yuga thought. Knowing this, he said, "If it really works as well as we think, then a higher cost isn't a problem. Its effectiveness justifies the price, and we can market it as a premium product."
Incense was already a luxury in the Trainer industry. If this product entered the market, it would be a luxury among luxuries.
Hearing Yuga's reassurance, Lain finally felt at ease. After all the effort she'd put into developing this incense, it couldn't be shelved just because of its cost.
After wrapping up the discussion about the new incense, Lain suddenly said to Yuga, "Oh, by the way, can you help me record a video today? I want to send it to Yashushi"
Since YoYo Day Care had acquired Everlasting Workshop, its original owner, Yashushi, now only retained partial shares and no longer participated in its management. Instead, he worked as an incense instructor at Everlasting Workshop's training institute.
Lain often exchanged ideas with Yashushi, sending him videos of her making incense to use as teaching material.
Similarly, Misaki was in a similar situation. She frequently shared videos of her making PokéBlocks with the trainers at the institute to foster mutual learning and progress.
"Sure, should we start now?" Yuga agreed without hesitation.
"Exactly! I've already prepared all the materials."
With the recording equipment ready, the two got to work.
A few days later, Yuga brought samples of Lain's newly developed incense to meet with Joyka, hoping she could assist with testing.
After all, incense could be considered a type of medicine. Skilled incense makers often had extensive pharmacological knowledge, as mistakes in the process could lead to products that might harm Pokémon instead of benefiting them.
In addition to testing the new incense, Yuga also needed to deliver the first batch of Revival Herbs sent by the Nido family to Joyka.
The batch consisted entirely of the lowest-grade three-leaf Revival Herbs—not a single five-leaf one was included. Yuga couldn't help but think how miserly the Nido family was.
The three-leaf Revival Herbs were quite rare in the outside world, but for the Nido family, they were a renewable resource, with new crops sprouting every six to ten months. It wasn't really a big deal for them.
When Yuga saw the Revival Herbs sent by the Nido family, he thought about the nine-leaf Revival Herb they had previously sent him. This level of Revival Herb wasn't just for healing; it had deeper, more profound benefits.
However, Yuga hadn't yet decided which of his Pokémon to use it on. After all, the nine-leaf Revival Herb was quite versatile and could benefit Pokémon of any type.
When Yuga arrived at the Pokémon Center, it was bustling with activity, and Joyka was extremely busy, so Yuga offered to lend a hand.
After a while, when things calmed down, Joyka quietly asked, "Are you here about the Max Revive?"
Yuga smiled and replied, "Yes, but that's not all."
Joyka didn't press further and led Yuga inside.
Once inside, Yuga pulled a wooden box from his spatial bag. The box was neatly packed with many Revival Herbs.
Seeing so many herbs, Joyka's eyes widened. "So many? Where did you get them from?"
"Don't worry about where they came from. They're not stolen or anything," Yuga replied. "If they're useful, feel free to take them. One-tenth of them are yours, the rest, please turn them into Max Revive."
Yuga had already taken his share.
"Alright, I'll take them," Joyka said, relieved.
"Also," Yuga said, taking out a palm-sized box. "This is a new incense we've developed at our shop. Can you test it for me and check if there are any harmful ingredients or if it could have side effects on Pokémon?"
Joyka took the box, opened it, and sniffed carefully. After a moment, she said in surprise, "This has a very unique scent, and it's quite refreshing."
But then, as if sensing something wasn't quite right, she sniffed again more cautiously. After setting aside her doubts for the moment, she said to Yuga, "Don't worry, I'll handle it for you."
"That's all. You're busy, so I'll leave now," Yuga said, wrapping up their conversation.
A few days later, Yuga was called back to the Pokémon Center because the test results for the incense were in.
Holding the newly received report, Joyka said seriously, "This incense can't be released to the market."
Yuga was shocked. "What's wrong? Is there a problem?"
Joyka nodded. "There is, and it's a big one."
"This new incense does indeed accelerate the energy accumulation of Grass-type Pokémon and enhances their comprehension abilities, but it has a fatal side effect. If used for long periods, it causes Pokémon to become addicted."
This addictive substance was difficult to detect. If Joyka hadn't had access to the most advanced detection equipment from the Joy family and a sharp intuition cultivated by growing up in the family, it would have been nearly impossible to find the issue.
She only arrived at this conclusion after repeatedly testing it with suspicion.
Yuga couldn't believe it. "That's impossible..."
"The test results are clear," Joyka affirmed. "The incense likely contains Liligant pollen, which reacted with another ingredient Plupflowers creating a substance that can cause addiction in Pokémon."
When she first smelled the incense, she sensed something wasn't quite right. After the testing, her suspicions were confirmed.
Yuga knew about Pulpflowers—they were one of the many flowers he grew in the secondary garden of his flower fields and were one of the auxiliary materials for making Rose Incense.
"That's really unfortunate," Yuga said with regret. "Did Lain accidentally create a new kind of drug?"
"I haven't finished making the Max Revive yet, so you'll have to wait a few more days," Joyka added.
Yuga responded, "It's not urgent, take your time."
They hadn't even used up the Max Revive left by Joyin for the Nido family, so this wasn't an urgent matter.
Back at the shop, Yuga Yuga shared the test results with Lain. She was deeply discouraged by the news.
However, she didn't give up. After regrouping, she threw herself into a new round of research.
What do you think?
